One of the most impact lessons I ever learned was Leaders remember the SHADOW they cast. Always. In the small interactions and the transformational projects, the conversations and the emails, successful people are aware of how they impact others. Successful leaders embrace that SHADOW and work hard every day to make it powerful, positive and inspirational. Their SHADOW listens, learns and coaches. Their SHADOW celebrates victories, learns from defeats and is never quite satisfied or comfortable – always improving. The question is this. What is the SHADOW you cast? If a third party anonymously surveyed the people around you for words that describe you – what would they come back with? How does your real SHADOW compare to the one in your head? How would the words of those close to you compare to those on the “3rd” degree? Does the SHADOW you are actually casting reflect the person you want to be? A sobering thought in many cases. Today, thanks to camera phones, email and social media our SHADOWS are broader, more public and transparent than ever before, a blessing and a curse – just turn on TMZ or watch the news. One reference piece estimated average professional people in the USA have more than 400 “touches” with others every single day emails (sent received, forwarded), phone, social media, in person that is more than 140,000 “interactions” every year. The Guardian website created an online app that gave a pictorial reference to a person’s network based on “3 degrees” of separation showing. A person with 200 “friends” has a three degree network of more than 5,300,000 people (factoring out duplicates) – incredible. How many interactions (of ANY sort) do you have every day? How many “friends” do you have? Your SHADOW is probably far bigger than you imagined. Friedrich Nietzsche A single sunbeam is enough to drive away many shadows. The black mass gradually begins to take the shape of a person or animal form. It is only through shadows that one comes to know the light. I thought this the first time I laid eyes on you, that the shadow you cast on the ground is only half as dark as that of ordinary people. The SHADOW we cast. From the moment we get up, to the moment we go to bed our actions, words, attitudes and interactions impact others – that’s the SHADOW we cast. It happens whether we like it or not, every second of the day, in everything we do conversations, emails, tweets, status updates, blogs, even the look in our eyes and the way we carry ourselves – all are part of the SHADOW we cast. The appearance of shadow people is often accompanied by a misty or foggy view. Tell me the name of the shadow that is always hanging over you.
